Section 8 - MEDICATION GUIDELINES

ANTIHISTAMINES

Famotidine (PEPCID) / H2 Histamine blocker

DESCRIPTION

  • Famotidine inhibits histamine at H2 receptor site in the gastric parietal cell, which inhibits gastric acid secretion.

INDICATIONS

  • Hives; Allergic reaction; Short term treatment of duodenal and gastric ulcers, management of GERD and erosive esophagitis.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • Hypersensitivity to the medication
  • Renal impairment

PRECAUTIONS

  • Hepatic disease, renal disease, elderly

DOSAGE

  • Currently supplied in 20mg/50 mL Premixed bags or 20mg Vials
  • Adults: 20mg/50mL or 20mg mixed into a 100mL bag, given at a wide open rate.
  • Pediatrics - refer to the Handtevy System.
