Section 8 - MEDICATION GUIDELINES
ANTIHISTAMINES
Famotidine (PEPCID) / H2 Histamine blocker
DESCRIPTION
- Famotidine inhibits histamine at H2 receptor site in the gastric parietal cell, which inhibits gastric acid secretion.
INDICATIONS
- Hives; Allergic reaction; Short term treatment of duodenal and gastric ulcers, management of GERD and erosive esophagitis.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
- Hypersensitivity to the medication
- Renal impairment
PRECAUTIONS
- Hepatic disease, renal disease, elderly
DOSAGE
- Currently supplied in 20mg/50 mL Premixed bags or 20mg Vials
- Adults: 20mg/50mL or 20mg mixed into a 100mL bag, given at a wide open rate.
- Pediatrics - refer to the Handtevy System.
